Going Solo: Tabletop Games for One
Description
Solo tabletop gaming has seen a marked rise in popularity since 2020, driven by the broader availability of solo-friendly designs and a vibrant and growing online community that shares playthroughs and recommendations. However, to date, game studies research hasn’t shown much attention to solo play. To try and address this gap Dr Matt Coward-Gibbs (York St John University) and Dr Ryan Scoats (Birmingham City University) have embarked on a project to rectify this!
This seminar presents early insights and analysis from semi-structured interviews with solo gamers, focusing on the experiences and practices of playing alone. Alongside sharing some preliminary findings, we hope to create a broader discussion around the value and impact of solo play.
