Play and buy the multi-award-winning Thieves, and our new game, Demons

Our multi-award-winning game Thieves is being relaunched at the show with enhanced Norse styling. In addition, we are launching our new occult-themed game, Demons.

Thieves is a fast-paced game of strategy and chance set in a labyrinth with pathways that change with every roll of a pair of dice. In it, two players compete to steal a hoard of gold. They must then battle to keep it, make their escape and win.

Games of Thieves typically last about 30 minutes, although luck with the dice, the skill of the players and the pace of play can result in longer or shorter games. While chance may contribute to winning individual games, superior use of strategy will determine the winner of a series. The rules take only a couple of minutes to learn, and the game is typically understood and enjoyed by players aged 8 and up.

At the UK Games Expo 2018, Thieves won both the 'Judges' and the 'People's Choice' for 'Best Abstract Game', and Imagination Gaming (a UK organisation that promotes the value of games as part of social development) awarded it their 'Family Gold' badge.

Demons is an asymmetric game of strategy and chance in which warrior exorcists, sent by the puritanical secret society The Magisterium, invade a temple of the ancient god of Lust and Wrath, Asmodee. One player directs a cadre of slayers to destroy all who oppose their religious doctrine. And the other directs a coven of Demons to possess the invaders and enable their deity's escape. Possible movements and actions are determined by three dice.

Each game of Demons is a match of two battles, each lasting about 60 minutes, though players' skill and the pace of play can make games longer or shorter. As there are asymmetries in their numbers, powers, and positions, after the first battle, players must swap the roles of Slayers and Demons, as this is the only way to fairly decide an overall winner.  The rules take only a couple of minutes to learn, and the game is typically understood and enjoyed by players aged 12 and up.

Demons takes its basic premise from the ancient Norse game of Hnefatafl, adds dice (believed to determine action in some of its lost variants), and steals the capturing mechanic of the popular 19th-century English game of Reversi. Research into the occult beliefs of secret societies in Victorian London supplied the story concept, imagery, and symbols.

Our games are designed on the principles that they should be exciting and beautiful, have simple rules from which complexity arises from dilemmas of choice, and offer deep, infinitely variable play.

Warrior exorcists, sent by the puritanical secret society, The Magisterium, are invading a hidden temple of Asmodee, the ancient god of Lust and Wrath.

One player directs a cadre of Slayers to destroy all who oppose their religious doctrine. And the other directs a coven of Demons to possess the invaders, and enable their deity's escape.

Despite the mythological theme, Demons is fundamentally an abstract game inspired by three venerable abstracts. It borrows its premise and asymmetrical setup of opposing pieces and objectives from the Norse game of Hnefatafl. It adds dice believed to determine action in some of that game's lost variants. And although these dice determine possible movements, as they do in Backgammon, strategy more heavily outweighs chance in play than it does in that ancient game. It steals the capturing mechanic of the 19th-century English game of Reversi (AKA Othello).
