Tripods: Humans against Martians
Survival against the Odds
London at the height of the British Empire. The seat of the monarchy of much of the known world, an invulnerable force at the height of its power; and yet, far away across the vast expanse of space, a civilisation more advanced and minds far superior were watching and scheming to add Earth to their own colonies.
When the comets appeared in the sky above England few but the avid astronomers commented on anything but their beauty. Not long after, the papers were reporting an entirely different story as the gleaming silver pods which fell from the sky began to disgorge their contents upon the unsuspecting populace…
In TRIPODS! you play the panicked London population fighting for survival in the face of terrible odds. If you are to survive you must work together, but to escape you might just have to throw a few unfortunates to the fighting machines! It's dog eat dog as players vie for the ever decreasing safe zones and routes out of the city, dodging Martians and backstabbing rivals and trying to take down those pesky TRIPODS! whenever the opportunity allows. On a board that's always changing, with an uncertain chain of events, TRIPODS! is never quite the same experience twice.
Players must attempt to save as many of their ten Populace Counters as possible from the Martian invaders, using Military Units to attack them wherever possible. Escape is via steamship at the docks or the train from one of the stations, but as the invasion progresses the stations and docks begin to close as the deadly red alien Creeper spreads across the board. The game uses a system of cards and action points to mix together strategy and chance. A good grasp of the way elements interact will give players an advantage, but a liberal dose of luck will be just as effective in avoiding the clutches of the Martians. There are no guarantees when it comes to escaping the city. The narrative is played out through Tidings and Headline cards which spread rumours of the invasion. Players may react to these cards by playing their own Character Cards, but each player only has a limited number and each can only be used once, so timing is critical.
TRIPODS! Is available to order now from Oakbound Games (www.propworkshop.co.uk/oakbound). Oakbound are also running a competition to design the meeples that will be provided with the game, full details on the website. Competition ends April 1st 2014. Two expansions are planned, “The Steampunks” which will introduce new character cards, military units and alien machines and “The Collaborators” which will provide more opportunities for players to sabotage each other’s attempts at escape.
