Exodus: Proxima Centauri NSKN Legendary Prototype Game

Exodus: Proxima Centauri

After a devastating nuclear war, six human factions are seeking shelter in the Centauri system. On the verge of extinction, the humans are saved by a superior civilization, allegedly the Centaurians, and each faction is given a fresh start on a new planet. Thus the exodus of humanity seems to have ended on the planets orbiting the star called Proxima Centauri. When the Centaurians announce their departure, the struggle for power commences once again.

In Exodus: Proxima Centauri, the six factions fight for dominance in an epic empire-building game, striving to build a new human empire on the ashes of the Centaurian civilization. Each player will build his own space fleet of customized ships and conquer new planets, fight the Centaurian Resistance and the other players, negotiate and vote for political decisions, research Centaurian technologies, and much more.

Wild Wild Fun West NSKN Legendary Prototype Game

Wild Wild Fun West is a card game for 3 to 8 players.

Players are working together to build a town in the Wild West, making decisions based on the amount of money they are willing to invest. While the players appear to be building the town together, each of them has a secret agenda. The aim of each player is to have built at least 4 of the 6 objective buildings on their secretive Objective Card.

To earn money, players employ professions. Each turn, a number of Profession Cards is open for bidding and players participate in auctions to get them. Professions do not only influence each player’s direct income, but they also influence the player on their left, adding another layer of strategy to the bidding process. Every turn, players will bid for new professions and the building that will be built in the town. The players will then collect income from their active Profession Cards.

Codinca Backspindle Games

Deep within the rain forests of the Yucatan rival teams of treasure hunters have recently discovered the lost city of Codinca. In the centre of the once great citadel stands a stone temple. Local legends tell of the great treasures that lie buried beneath the temple but, despite many months of searching no doorway or entrance has been found.

On the top of the temple stands a square stone altar.  A small clay totem stands in the centre of this surrounded by a pattern of 16 carved stone tiles.  Examining them closely you discover that an intricate series of mechanisms allow the tiles to switch places and turn over revealing a stone side and a gold side to each.  A set of simple icons carved on each side of the pillar seem to indicate that a sequence of 4 different patterns must be formed to open the temple.

Can you crack the code and be the first to unlock the secrets of Codinca?

A 2-4 simple strategy game planned for release in September 2012 so this will be a great opportunity to try it out. Ages 7+

2300 AD Mongoose Publishing NEW Game
  • 2300AD games range from interstellar exploration and interstellar war, down to the gritty streets and the mega-cities of the human Core. This is a game about people, and their rise to the stars. Aliens are a part of the 2300AD milieu, but the focus of the game is on Humans.

2300AD strives to obey the laws of the universe as we know them. The stutterwarp drive, the technology that allows humanity to travel faster than light, is the sole departure from this. Some of the other technologies bend the laws a little, but that’s from the standpoint of the early 21st century. Three hundred years in the future is a long time. There are no blasters or laser swords in 2300AD, no magic anti-gravity or artificial gravity – just guns and helicopters, spin habitats and spaceplanes. At the same time, though, 2300AD is a game, not a hard-and-fast technical simulation.

FOUNDATION Cubiko NEW Game

UK Games Expo 2012 sees the launch of a brand new abstract strategy game called FOUNDATION, by London-based games developer, Cubiko Games.

Now in his 4th year at the UK Games Expo, Gavin Birnbaum, founder of Cubiko Games is bringing yet another exciting new game to the UK's largest games fair.

The rules for FOUNDATION are some of simplest seen at Expo for a new strategy game for a long time, yet the game itself rivals chess with its numerous possibilities and strategies required.
FOUNDATION is a 2 player game. Players start with 14 blocks each and the objective is to place as many of your pieces as you can to gain the most points. Points are awarded for each piece that a newly placed block makes contact with. In effect, the stronger the ‘foundations’, the more points you will receive.

The game itself was created by a fellow games designer, Rafi Arkin. He had the idea for the game after helping his 5 years old daughter, Isabelle, play a game of her own creation using Jenga Blocks and plastic 'Go Go' pieces.

43AD Chronicle City NEW Game

Ex quocumque facere poteris te sauciabit, nihilo comprehenso.....
Anything you do can get you killed, including nothing.......

43AD is a gritty military-style game with a slice of dark horror running through it. Life is grim and the world of the native Britons is painted in dark and horrific colours. Britain is a place of fear and death, terrors and torments, and the Iron-Age tribes live with these horrors. Celtic priests, the druids, contain them in lakes and pits and forests. When the legions step onto British soil, they step onto a land of ancient horrors of which they (as yet) know nothing. Life, honour and warfare amongst the tribes is explained for players and GMs alike.

Characters are Roman soldiers, fighting for the emperor in a hostile land against the battle-hardened warriors of the tribes. This is the visible enemy, but beyond, should the Game Master wish to go there, lay the dark secrets of Britain, the night terrors, the death-bringing spirits of the wild, the night crawlers, the face eaters, the skinchangers and the rest of the monsters and wild things that infest Britain.
Using fast and gory rules from the tried and test web-game Zenobia, 43AD powers along at a pace. All rolls are made on d6, with the exception of a d100 being used in character creation.
Includes:

  • 9 maps of Roman Britain
  • Examples of both play and character creation
  • 31 adventure seeds
  • Pregenerated squad of Roman soldiers
  • Complete list of useful NPCs
  • GM guide to running Roman military games
  • Fully mapped starting location and base area
  • Spells
  • Monsters
  • Cultural information on Romans and Britons
  • Character write-ups that fit on a single index card
  • 10 minute character creation

Dungeon Slayers Chronicle City NEW Game

Welcome to Dungeonslayers, the role-playing game, in which the characters are slaying monsters and looting dungeons in an archaic and old-fashioned way.
The rules of Dungeonslayers were designed to be very basic and simple on purpose, to bring the charming flair of old-school gaming back to life.

Dungeonslayers is not about having elaborate, realistic rule mechanics nor about playing out pseudointellectual drama filled with egomaniac monologues. Instead it’s about straight-forward plots in your traditional fantasy world, where evil is still evil, where monsters have to be killed mercilessly, where devious traps strike and where phat loot awaits, while pencil and graph paper work their own special magic around the gaming table.

Despite the rules’ lack of details or possibly because of this, player characters tend to evolve into highly individual personalities.
So, let’s put on the chainmail once again, draw your blade or dig up the spell book, the next dungeon and its monstrous hordes await your return.

Dungeon Slayers Chronicle City NEW Game

Aegis is a game that both tactical gamers and fans of narrating exciting stories will love. As agents of an elite corp in charge of exploring the ruins of a lost civilization, players must embark on dangerous missions in uncharted territories filled with unexpected dangers. In the tradition of Japanese console RPGs they will clear their way with energy guns, sharp katanas and mystic spells, but above all with the mysterious Artifacts, symbiotes created by the technology of the Ancients which turn their owners into the preferred target of the dreadful members of the Forsaken Legion.

Each member has his or her role in the team, be it investigation or combat, which will have a strong influence on how exploration and armed conflicts evolve. By means of an innovative combat system based on a simple battle grid, Aegis incorporates a strong tactical component into its gameplay, while still focusing on how a player narrates each attack his or her character makes, rather than on the mechanical part of combat.
Aegis will give you plenty of memorable game evenings, either by playing a single, frenzied mission, or by following your heroes' deeds through a long and exciting adventure saga.

Bushido GCT

Bushido is a game of savage battles, of cunning stratagems and last-ditch defences, and where debts of honour are paid in blood. In Bushido, the fate of the world hangs not on armies but on individual heroes, men and women of extraordinary capacity, attuned to the all-permeating life force known as Ki. This force is the very fabric of the universe, and those with the appropriate training or natural talent can tap into this energy source and gain seemingly superhuman powers. In the world of Bushido, the delicate tapestry of Ki – and thus the universe itself –is threatened by the forces of imbalance, and it is up to you to protect it – or help rip it apart. In a game of Bushido, nothing less than the universe itself is at stake. Are you ready for the challenge of the Way of the Warrior?

Bushido is an oriental fantasy tabletop miniature battle game for two players. Each player commands a force of no more than a handful of individuals, represented by 32mm metal miniatures. These forces meet on the battlefield and the commanders (the players, that is) try to outwit, outfight and outlive the opposing force and fulfil their battle objectives while denying the enemy theirs. If you have played tabletop miniature games before, Bushido falls into the ‘skirmish game’ category: all miniatures represent individuals and your force consists of a small group of unique characters rather than a big faceless army. A game of Bushido is fast-moving, flexible and filled with strategizing, counter-strategizing and counter-counter-strategizing. Your tactical acumen is important, but as dice add an element of randomness, so too is your ability to think on your feet. A typical game of Bushido takes between one and two hours to play – more if you are new to the game, less if you are a seasoned veteran

This was another game that was released a little too late to be considered in the awards in 2011 and so is an entry in 2012.

The board game Bronze is based on the Windows computer game of the same name from developer Dreamspike Studios and publisher Shrapnel Games. Each civilization has its own strengths and weaknesses, and the game has no luck elements.

While the computer game is mostly for solitaire play, with a Hotseat option for up to four players, Bronze the board game will be for two players. The game will include six civilizations, which will slightly tweaked from their digital versions.

Medieval Mastery Chaos publishing NEW Edition Game

Medieval Mastery was initially released at the UK Games Expo June 2011, A new second edition with revised artwork is being released in 2012. As Medieval Mastery came too late to be considered for the awards in 2011 it is an entrant in 2012.

Enter a medieval realm as you take the role of a feudal King embroiled in a war to gain control over the surrounding lands. As a King, you must send your retinues of brave knights onto the field of battle, who then fight with strength of arms and courage, to drive off your foes and conquer the territories of the region. But that’s not all! You must also manage your resources wisely in order to aid your kingdom in times of need, though be wary of your adversaries as all are intent to claim Medieval Mastery!

Medieval Mastery is a fun, tactical board game that incorporates Area Control, Hand Management and Modular Board Design as well as Variable Player Powers and Phase Order. The rules include alternate gameplay variations. This, coupled with a modular game board and a random distribution of crowns, orbs and sceptres, means that no two games will ever be the same! In addition, the number of components included allows for up to three games of varying sizes to be played simultaneously.

Snowdonia Surprised Stare Games PROTOTYPE

The peaks of Snowdonia rise before you, encased in mist, their summits barely visible. The highest is Snowdon (Wyddfa) herself at 1,085 metres. The year is 1894, and the Snowdon Mountain Tramroad and Hotels Company Limited has been formed to build a branch line from Llanberis to the summit. You can scarcely believe it's possible!

In Snowdonia players represent work gangs providing labour for the construction of the Snowdon Mountain Railway. Unlike other train games you will have to excavate your way up a mountain side, as well as make and lay the track, construct viaducts and stations. All this in competition with the weather of the Welsh mountains (and the game itself)! You may be assisted by a train (though thats not always best) and you'll be able to collect essential materials from the Stock Yard. You will obtain special work contracts that give you bonuses. Can you contribute more than the other players to the magnificence of the Snowdon Mountain Railway?

You can find out more about Snowdonia, and how it plays, on its Boardgamegeek page: http://www.boardgamegeek.com/boardgame/119432/snowdonia.

Surprised Stare will be running demos of the game in it's pre-production form all through the Expo weekend - just pop by their Stand to arrange a session!

On the Cards

Surprised Stare Games NEW Game

Both a game and a way to create games, On The Cards is a window into the possibilities offered by a traditional deck of cards.

On The Cards comprises a deck of 50 or so rule cards that define how cards move from the (shared) deck, through players' hands and into tricks, and how cards are scored at the end of the round. By combining these rule cards, you can create thousands of games!

The Fixed Rule cards (black) are always used. In each round, the rules on the Fixed Rule cards are combined with the rules on one card of each other type: Deal, Aim, Card Play and Trick Taking.

  • Deal (red) defines how the dealer will distribute cards.
  • Aim (yellow) defines the objective of the round and how it will be scored.
  • Card Play (green) defines how the players will play cards.
  • Trick Taking (blue) defines how tricks will be won.

In later games you can add Optional Twist cards (mauve) and Double cards to spice things up.

The Great Museum Medusa Games Prototype

Players take on the roles of the owners of the world’s great museums. They vie with each other to build the best museums in the world by collecting artefacts – prehistoric, art, jewellery, statues, sarcophagi, inscriptions, weapons and pottery. These are collected in the rooms of the museums. The various rooms have a limited number of spaces for exhibits but are connected together by doors. Several rooms can be considered to be a single exhibition if connected together.

In the course of the game you will also host Special Exhibitions such as 'The Relics of Peking Man' or 'the Lost Glory of Carthage' which will require collecting specific sets of exhibits. You also will be on the lookout for clues that will enable you to collect one main attraction for your museum – an artifactof global significance such as the Complete Works of Shakespeare or the Sword of Julius Caesar.

All of these activities bring your museum value to set it above the rest. In an effort to achieve victory you will fund expeditions around the world, competing with the other players as to which to support and to what extent. You will buy and sell artefacts on the world market and you may be tempted to risk the black market (just don't get caught or it will look bad for your museum). You will also invest in action cards which can give you the edge in various aspects of the game.

Five times in the game there is an Exhibition Phase. During this phase you calculate the VALUE of your museum. VALUE is gained from the stars on each tile you own in Regional Halls with bonuses for larger collections. Completed Special exhibitions also grant VALUE as do some action cards and the Main Attraction.

Museum VALUE is used to calculate how much prestige your Museum gained from that Exhibition Phase as well as how much income it receives. At the end of the game you gain additional Prestige from each of the Special Exhibitions that were completed during the game.

The best managed museum will gain the most Prestige and will win the game. Will yours be The Great Museum?

Each player is the only person to know which colour is their own and should try as discretely as possible to ensure that this is the majority colour across the playing board. In turn, players place a pyramid. These form piles of which the colour is determined by the piece at the top of the pile. If a player places a piece on top of a pyramid of the same colour, both pyramids cancel each other out and are removed from the game: the pile then tales on the colour of the piece underneath. Galaxy Trucker – Another Big Expansion.

Just as big as the previous one. New tiles. New Support teams to be hired to enhance your shipbuilding experience. New ship classes, including huge IVB ships. Yes, you may also fly round IV, and you can be sure that the cards are extra nasty there. Especially the intruders that board your ship, wander around and eat or blow up your stuff, unless your heroic crew beats them. Wait… that’s a different game, right? Aren’t we rather speaking about Space Alert now? Well… it seems this “lets board a ship and eat its crew” mode spreads prety fast in the known universe these days, as with this expansion, it can happen also in Galaxy Trucker.

Come see this new expansion at the CGE stand, near GamesLore
