So in 3 weeks or so everyone will be turning up to play games at Expo. Let's say you arrive , find the board game Library (in the Library Room) and the Open Gaming Space unpack your five player mega game and then stare at your mate and realise 1+1 is not 5.
"We need players!" he says.
"Well duh!" is your witty reply.
But how do you advetise this and how do you get players to your table.
Naturally rugby tackles, drugs and seduction are of course entirely legal at UK Games Expo* but we have a practical solution. In the Board Game LIbrary are 72 of these chaps:
Placing one of these on your table is a signal that you are looking for players.

Blood Bowl Team Manager
A bone-breaking, breathtaking standalone card game of violence and outright cheating for two to four players. Lead your gang of misfits and miscreants to glory over your rivals all to become Spike! Magazine's Manager of the Year!
Once a manager has chosen one of the six teams, he has five weeks to groom them into the best in the league, culminating with the Blood Bowl tournament. He does this by competing at highlights, collecting payouts, upgrading his personnel, and drafting Star Players.
The season culminates with the Blood Bowl tournament. After the Blood Bowl, the season ends. Players then tally up their total fans and the manager with the most fans wins the game.
Players are placed in control of a vast interstellar civilization, competing for success with its rivals. They will explore new star systems, research technologies, and build spaceships to wage war with. There are many potential paths to victory, so they need to plan their strategy according to the strengths and weaknesses of their species, while paying attention to the other civilizations' endeavors.
The shadows of the great civilizations are about to eclipse the galaxy. Lead your people to victory!
String Railway is a unique train game that consists of coloured strings, tokens, station tiles, and a board for scoring. To set up, first place the string tied in a big circle on the table to establish the field area for the game. Next, place a small circle of string to represent mountains and a line of string to represent a river. Finally, place the main stations for each player equal distances apart from one another. On a turn, you draw and place a station tile, then try to place a railroad string between your stations in an effort to connect them in order to form your own train network. Connected stations earn victory points (VPs). After five turns, the game ends and the player with the most VPs wins.
Dobble is a simple pattern recognition game in which players try to find an image shown on two cards.
Each card in Dobble features eight different symbols, with the symbols varying in size from one card to the next. Any two cards have exactly one symbol in common.
Rules for five different games – each an observation game with a speed element – are included with Dobble, with the first player to find a match either gaining or getting rid of a card.
You are the leader of one of the 7 great cities of the Ancient World. Gather ressources, develop commercial routes and affirm your military supremacy. Build your city and erect an architectural wonder which will transcend future times.
7 Wonders lasts three ages. In each age, players receive seven cards from a particular deck, choose one of those cards, then pass the remainder to an adjacent player. Players reveal their cards simultaneously, paying resources if needed or collecting resources or interacting with other players in various ways. Each player then chooses another card from the deck they were passed, and the process repeats until players have six cards in play from that age. After three ages, the game ends and victory points are scored in a number of fields including Science, Military and Wealth.
Queen Games have confirmed that these games will be on demo at UKGE.
In this real time cooperative game, players must escape from a cursed temple before the temple collapses and kills one or more explorers, thereby causing everyone to lose. Players roll dice and take actions simultaneously. All of this happens while a soundtrack plays counting down the minutes until you become trapped. Using dice players must roll the right symbols to enter a room, solve its puzzle or find new rooms working together to escape.
Each game, players will use a random set of Kingdom Builder cards, special actions, and terrain sectors to build the map, ensuring you won't play the same game twice!
By skilful building of settlements players create their own kingdoms, aiming to earn the most gold at the end of the game. The 3 Kingdom Builder cards specify the conditions which must be met in order to earn the desired gold.
Players are master painters, working to restore a fresco in a Renaissance church.
Each round begins with players deciding what time they would like to wake up for the day. The earlier you wake up, the earlier you will be in turn order, and the better options you will be guaranteed to have. Wake up early too often, however, and your apprentices will become unhappy and stop working as efficiently. They would much rather sleep in!
Then, players decide their actions for the turn, deploying their apprentice work force to various tasks. You'll need to buy paint, mix paint, work on painting the fresco, raise money by painting portraits (which you'll need to buy the aforementioned paint!), and perhaps even send your apprentices to the opera in order to increase their happiness. Points are scored mostly by painting the fresco, which requires specific combinations of paints, so you'll need to buy and mix your paints wisely, in addition to beating other players to the paints and frescos you would like to paint.
The Classic Spiele des Jahre 2003 winner, with players acquiring buildings to be placed within their Alhambra complex.
On a player's turn, a player may take money from the open money market, purchase a building from the building market, or engage in construction and re-construction projects with buildings that have been placed in the player's reserve. The game rewards efficiency, as when a player purchases a building from the market for the exact amount of money, the player may take another turn.
Players with the most buildings in each of the six building types score in each of the scoring phases, and points are awarded for players' longest external "wall" section within their complex. The game ends when the building market can no longer be replenished from the building tile supply, and there is a final scoring, whereupon the player with the highest score wins.
Esdevium have confirmed that they will be bringing a GIANT sized version of the popular cooperative game where players take part in a global fight against a deadly infection. See the game in the King's suite.
Every year at Expo a number of traders and groups support charities. This year at UK Games Expo we have TWO costumed groups who will be collecting for Charity at their stand in the Kings Suite. (You can't miss it as its where the Tardis will have materialised).
Who's Company (Dr Who Costumed Group) will be collecting for Addenbrooke’s Charitable Trust and Galactic Knights (Star Wars and Scifi group) for Cancer Research UK.
The Bring and Buy will charge 10% commission which will be given to the same charities (Addenbrooke’s Charitable Trust, Heartline and Cancer.)Research UK.
Coledspring have released details of their planned demonstartion games. Its an extensive list and their space at the show is substantial this year so there is sure to be lots to try out:
Rome & Carthage
The legendary game of conquests and bluffs set around the Mediterranean Sea. Players control one of four empires. Their goal is to mobilise their armies to occupy the others and destroy their opponents’ resources. Armies are made up of footmen, cavalry, elephants and galleys – all have different movement rules, with combinations of cards offering different powers or causing special actions and therefore…. outcomes. Special expansion cards will be available at UKGAMESEXPO.

Played over the four seasons of the year, players start with 8 workers and a home tile and look to grow their workforce use them to expand their village. Additional workers, tiles and resources arrive during the first three seasons and players look to acquire these through a clever auction process. Players can reap the benefits of their village’s facilities or borrow those of other players, but at a cost. In the final season, players choose from their winter tiles and these are auctioned to produce VPs.
Keyflower offers extensive gameplay with the various challenges faced and the decisions that have to be made. As not every tile is used in every game, each time you play, it will be different.

A joint design by Richard Breese and Sebastian Bleasdale, Keyflower is the seventh game in the key series and is published by Huch and Friends.
The game of bluffing and bidding. Each player takes a feather from the pack and without looking at it pops it into their headband. The feathers all have numbers printed on them. Adding up the numbers visible to them, the first player shouts out a number they think is lower than or equal to the total of the feathers in play. The next player has to shout out a higher number. Once you think the number shouted is higher than the total of all the feathers, shout ‘Coyote’ - if you’re right the player gets a tomahawk added to their headband, if you’re wrong – guess where it ends up? Three tomahawks and you’re out!

Who knew that placing words in a circle made them so difficult to find? ThinkFun – that’s who! The simplest game to explain, but not as easy as it looks to play.
The circles on each card, black, red and blue – all contain a hidden word. Starting with the black ring, players find the word written around the circle – seen it? Shout it out but be careful – if you’ve got it wrong you might be giving the other players a clue! If you’re right you win the card. Take it and turn it over; the colour of the back of the card you just won tells the players which circle they’re looking at next.
The first person to win 10 cards wins the game.

Players take turns placing location cards on north-south or east-west axis in relation to previously placed cards on the table. If you're not sure, make your best guess but watch out as your opponents may call your bluff and challenge you, if they are right you will lose a point if your card is not placed correctly. Everyone will learn as they play and will most likely discover that many places are not positioned where they imagined they were in relation to each other.
With 200 location cards and two levels of difficulty, both young minds and seasoned globetrotters will lose themselves in the fun of this great game of directions!

The eggs are done! A game of memory and bluff. The thing about eggs – is that they all look like eggs. Move yours to the opposite side of the board – when they get there flip them over. Now comes the tricky part, once they’re flipped over you can’t see who they belong to.
Your challenge is to get all your eggs back to your side of the board – but are you moving your egg or your opponents? Players can either move an egg or secretly check who it belongs to. When you think you have all your eggs home shout ‘the eggs are done’. If you’re right you win the game, if you’re wrong you’re out!

Bluff your way to victory. You hand is full of nasty creatures, cockroaches, rats, stink bugs and more. Pass a card to another player and decide whether to be honest about which creature it is or not. The recipient has three choices, believe you, disbelieve you or look at the card and pass it on.
If you are challenged correctly, you end up with the card, if incorrectly then the challenged is stuck with the nasty creature. If they pass the card on, will they maintain your story or try a double bluff ?
The game finishes either when someone has no cards to pass or any player has four of the same critter face up on the table in front of them.

The goal of the game is to gather the best kitty. High value cards are good, low scoring cards, not so good. Ares Games have confirmed that in the Esdevium Games area of the Kings Suite you will be able to try out a demo of their much anticipated Sails of War game. The game is currently on Kickstarter and is expected to be released in August.
Lords of War: Orcs versus Dwarves was released in December 2012 at the Dragonmeet Game Fair in London and is currently for sale in select retailers and through the Lords of War website, www.lords-of-war.com. Lords of War: Elves versus Lizardmen is now fully prototyped and will debut at the UK Games Expo 2013.
The game presently sees fantasy races engage in dynamic, tactical card battles which surge across your table top, taking between 30-45 minutes per game. With a burgeoning tournament scene and a very tight, innovate game play system, there is quite a lot of buzz about the product.
In the future Black Box Games, who are based in Worthing, plan to release armies with Historical, Science Fiction and Pop Culture themes, all of which will be interplayable and blendable with these Fantasy-themed decks, allowing players to create custom, balanced armies which suit their playing styles.
Each Lords of War double-deck pack is playable out of the box and contains two complete armies, all of which are, according to the back of the box, "ready and eager to engage in gratuitous acts of fantasy mayhem."

New Lords of War double-decks and expansion packs have already been developed in-house at Black Box Games to support the initial core packs and to provide for a pipeline of Lords of War products into the future. Key Celeste is the first mini expansion for the Keyflower game, which is being released at UK Expo in May. Key Celeste comprises one large Key Celeste hexagonal tile, one oversize grey ghost keyple and a rules sheet. Discovered drifting out to sea, unmanned and apparently abandoned, the Key Celeste ship was towed to the shore. Her cargo was untouched and the personal belongings of passengers and crew were still in place. What had caused the crew to abandon ship? The terrible truth was soon apparent. The Key Celeste had become a ghost ship! Players bid for the Key Celeste tile and obtain the ghost which they can use to frighten away and replace another player’s winning bid. The player who played the ghost acquires the replaced workers. Points are available at the end of the game for the owner of the Key Celeste tile and the ghost. Key Celeste adds more interest and considerations to Keyflower and changes this popular game in more ways than gamers are likely to initially anticipate! Board Game designers take note. This is an Expo First. Plastics for Games will have a small display at UKGE on the Northumbria Games stand (P6). It will mainly focus on new products in their range. UKGE hopes this will inspire Game Designers. We hope that this presence might expand in future years.

New Family/ Children's Game from Cognosis
Cognosis is a brand new, exciting, problem-solving family board game that will be launched at the UK Games Expo 2013. It was initially designed to help children pass Cognitive Ability Tests (CATs)*, tests that are faced by almost all children aged 10 or 11 in the UK in school entry exams and/or streaming exams, but it soon became clear that it had a much wider appeal.
Cognosis includes 600 questions based on the 3 question types that are commonly used in Cognitive Ability Tests – verbal reasoning, non-verbal reasoning and numerical reasoning.
In Cognosis, children have 50 seconds to answer the questions (the typical time they would have in a test) but adults only have 30 seconds, making it a game for all the family. Land on a square and answer the question. Get it right and progress up the board or get it wrong and go back to where you came from. Land on a Cognosis Challenge square and challenge one of your opponents to answer a question of your choice – which category do they find the hardest? If they get it wrong, they go back.
Reach the Final Challenge square and answer the question to be crowned the Cognosis Champion.
Cognosis can be played simply as a fun game by all the family but it is also so much more. It gives children valuable practice in answering CAT type questions in the typical time allowed in the tests and so promotes familiarity and builds confidence. The best bit - as it is fun, children want to play it and don’t realise that they are learning and developing with every throw of the dice and every question answered. They also love beating their Parents, Grand-parents or any adult so don’t think this is just a game for the children, they will want you to play too!

Steeplechase Launching at UK Games Expo.

Steeplechase is a race horse meeting played on a wooden board with wooden pieces. You are trying to win the race by outbluffing and outguessing your opponents. You will race along the track to the finish line jumping hurdles on the way.
The dealer will secretly give you a movement token. On your turn you must decide whether to play your token or swap with another play in the hope of getting something better. But watch out, if you land on a hurdle you can’t move.
UK Cthulhu Masters Tournament 20/03/2013
UK Games Expo is proud to announce the inaugural UK Cthulhu Masters Tournament. Set over the course of the Saturday, the tournament will be several rounds of organised Cthulhu play, with the victors from each round progressing to the finals for the chance to win the title of UK Cthulhu Masters Champion.
The preliminary rounds are set in the different era’s of the Cthulhu Mythos, starting at Invictus and encompassing Dark Ages, Gaslight, Call of Cthulhu, Achtung Cthulhu, and The Laundry, with one person from each round progressing to the final where they will go up against those who have been manipulating events across the centuries.
Sponsored by many of the companies attending the UK games Expo, there are a number of major prizes within the competition including a Leather bound copy of the Necronomicon and preserved samples of Mythos Creatures specially hunted down for the tournament.

Medusa Games - London Bridge Prototype at UKGE
Expo director Richard Denning will be showing a prototype of a game he is working on called London Bridge. Inspired by the Children's nursery rhymme the game is about the buliding and occasionally the falling down of the medieval London Bridge which stood for six centuries and was one of the wonders of the medieval world.

Players are Bridge Wardens - whose role was to gather the resources and use them to build the bridge. Of course you want to get credit for building the most and best parts of the bridge and if a bit of the bridge must fall down its nice if it is someone else's bit. ;-)

Hopefully the 2nd edition of Great Fire from Pandasaurus games may be on sale and demo this year. That corrects some of the issues with house colours of the original as well as offering highrer quality boards and cards. More news on that as i know it. Regarding Nine Worlds and Great Museum, this year most of my attention has had to be of course on the UKGE move. As a result the other prototypes I have bubbling along are - for this year - on the back burner. After UKGE I will make a decision about which games to try and move towards publication, aiming for 2014 most likely.
Steve Jackson Games at UK Games Expo, 17/03/2013
Birger Kreamer, MIB Control and Steve Jackson Games' Special Agent Europe confirmed that there will be a SJ Games display table at the Esdevium booth as well as tables in the demo game areas for MIB demos.
This year Steve Jackson Games are sending no less than four staff members from SJ Games to the
show: Andrew Hackard the overall manager of the Munchkin Range as well as Ross Jepson,Tobias Schulte-Krumpen and Birger himself along with several MiB members.
Andrew Hackard (Munchkin Czar) will also hold a speech at UK Games Expo - so come along and hear what he says about future Munchkin plans.
Hopefully there will be a chance to play the new upcoming Castellan game.

Gen 42 will be showing a game that should be fairly new to many at Expoas they have not demoed it before in here or elsewhere in the UK. The game is: Logan Stones
Logan Stones is a two player game that encourages memory and tactical thinking.
It is played without a board (just like Hive) using 18 beautiful tactile pieces that are etched and painted on both sides with different
symbols: Rock, Paper, Scissors.
Logan Stones takes the simplicity of ‘Rock Paper Scissors’ and adds to it a fast paced, fun game, that can also be played with strategic precision for a much more thought provoking experience. The aim is to make a line of 4 of the same symbol, but as you and your opponent are in control of the same stones and with them constantly being flipped over to reveal new symbols, it’s not as simple as it sounds.

Battle systems is bringing out a new range of modular terrain this year in spring or summer. It's a new type of terrain that nobody else in the world does in the sci-fi genre for this format.
We will have this on display along with our current Products. It will not be ready for sale, but people will get a change to see it up close. The product will then be funded by Kickstarter. The UK Games Expo will be the first show we have done this new line set up at.
The whole set is modular with smaller components such as furniture simply slotting together and the larger pieces clipping together to make the walls. Basically you have flat pieces that come straight out of the box combining to make three dimensional objects with no glueing or painting.

We will be running a Hive competition on our stand.
What we plan to do is have a Winner Stays on Competition with prizes given to the players who win the most games of Hive, in one day.
We plan to run a separate competition for each of the two days, and prizes given for both days.
What we will do is to give out tokens to the winners for each game won. They can come back and play anytime during the day and get more tokens.
At the end of the day all players should return and we will count the tokens. The player with most tokens wins.
We will be using different colour tokens for each day, so no cheating :)
Competition will run from 9:30am - 4:30pm on Saturday and 9:30am - 3.30pm on Sunday, giving us time to count and give out the prizes.
BGG Avatar Competition:
Another competition we will be running is a Board Game Geek Avatar Competition.
We will be asking people on BGG, who will be coming to the UK Games Expo, to make a badge of their BGG Avatar and wear it at the show.
To be entered into our Competition they need to come to our stand and introduce themselves whist wearing their BGG Avatar badge.
Emails and pictures will be taken, the person with the best made BGG Avatar badge will be contacted after the show to be sent their prize.
People are encouraged to make their badges using as much imagination as possible.
Extra points will be awarded for 3D badges and to badges made for unusual materials
